Canker sore does cause cancer. But, just to be one the safe side, it is best to get the sore checked by a doctor as some types of oral cancers do start out as ulcers in the mouth. Generally, when the canker sore does heal after seven to ten days, you should get it checked by a doctor. (See Reference 1)
Usually, it has been seen that there are some causes of canker sore that tend to delay the healing process. Being allergic to certain drugs or foods can delay the healing process if the drug or food is consumed regularly. Other causes of the sore persisting include erythema multiforme, oral herpes and bullous lichen planus. A doctor may perform a biopsy of the sore to determine whether the sore is really a canker sore or a mouth ulcer caused due to some other problem. (See Reference 1)
Canker sores are quite common and they tend to occur more in women compared to men. While the sores can develop at any age, it has been seen that people between 10 and 40 years are more prone to them. (See Reference 1) The sores appear primarily inside of the lips, cheeks, at the base of the gum or on the tongue. Also, canker sores tend to run in families, and have also been associated with a poor immune system. You can even get the sores if you bite your cheek or tongue, due to forceful brushing of teeth or injury caused by dental work. (See Reference 1) Even stress and deficiency of certain vitamins can result in canker sores.
Given the nature of canker sores, it can be emphatically said that the sores do not cause cancer. They are benign in nature. The ulcers that result in oral cancer are quite different in their makeup from canker sores.More Articles :
