Candida is a type of yeast that is naturally present on the body. Usually it is completely harmless and does not pose a problem or threat.
However, under some circumstances, the number of candida increases dramatically causing a series of problems and leading to candidiasis. There are many causes for candidiasis. Different factors work together causing the candida to increase in number and cause problems to the body. It has been seen that some people are more prone to candidiasis than others. These are people with weakened immune system. Those suffering from AIDS, cancer, diabetes, depression, the elderly and other chronic diseases are more susceptible to getting candidiasis. Also, taking certain medication can increase the number of candida in the body.
Nonetheless, it can be said that having a weak immune is the main reason for getting candidiasis. When the immune system is weak, the body is more vulnerable to pathogens. Also, when a person takes antibiotics, candida seems to thrive as the good bacteria that keep the candida numbers down tend to get killed. Even taking steroids or birth control pills and having a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals can cause the candida to increase in the body.
Therefore, it can be said that there is no single reason that causes candidiasis. Instead there are many different factors that come into play. On its own the number of candida does not increase. There are many medical reasons and also medications that cause the candida to increase in number. And, it is this increase that ultimately leads to candidiasis.
