Candidiasis is an infection that is caused by a group of fungi.

There are more than 20 species of fungi that can cause candidiasis, but the most common one is Candida albicans. Usually this fungus is omnipresent on the body, but sometimes they grow in number and thereby leading to an infection. • Vaginal candidiasis can be recognized when women get white thick discharge and they suffer from itchiness and irritation of the vagina and the surrounding areas. Also, some women experience pain during sexual intercourse or a burning sensation while urinating.
• Oral candidiasis is also known as thrush. This looks like thick white patches resting on a red base. The patches are present on the tongue, palate and insides of the cheeks. Sometimes, the patches look like white plaques that cannot be wiped out. Oral candidiasis is a painful condition that can make eating and swallowing quite difficult.
• On the skin, candidiasis looks like a flat red rash with uneven border. Usually the rash occurs in patches with satellite patches in the vicinity. The rash can be either painful or itchy.

People with weak immune system can get candidiasis that affects the internal organs. This can lead to the organ not functioning properly, or it can be a painful infection to have. Esophagitis is common among AIDS patients. This is quite similar to oral thrush, but it involves painful ulcers that extend all through the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. Swallowing is very painful in this condition. There is a possibility of the infection spreading to the intestine, which can cause poor absorption of food.

Cadidiasis can also spread to the blood. The person may or may not suffer from fever. If the infection reaches the brain, the person will show dramatic changes in his behavior or his mental functioning.
