Moles, also known as mother marks, are quite common.
Nearly everyone has moles, but there are some people who might end up having hundreds of moles. People with fair skin have more number of moles compared to a person with dark skin. However, the average count of moles on a body would be around 10 to 40 moles.Moles come in different colors, ranging from black, brown to red. Many people when they see a red mole want to know whether it could mean cancer. While this attitude is good as melanomas are most likely to develop inside a mole or near a mole, it still does not mean that all red moles mean skin cancer.
A mole is nothing but a group of cells known as melanocytes. Moles are considered to be an integral part of the pigmentation of the skin, and are present all over the body. Usually even infants are born with moles, but these are not visible to naked eyes. However, as the infant grows, the moles become noticeable. The moles that are not cancerous will always have a single color, and the edges will be irregular. The lifespan of a normal mole is around 50 years.
So, it does not mean that a red mole indicates skin cancer. In fact, if the red mole does not have any other color to it, then most probably it is completely harmless. However, if the red mole has definite and round edges, and it seems to be growing, then it is best to get it checked as that particular red mole could be cancerous.
