The choice of a center for treatment of lung cancer will depend not just on the rating of the center but the personal status of the patient as well. While some centers are large establishments in urban areas, others are small. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has given recognition to almost 66 facilities which have scientific excellence in treating cancer. The status of these facilities is reviewed once every 3 to 5 years. They receive funding for research work from NCI. While 59 facilities provide care for cancer patients, the rest focus mainly on the research work.

Mayo Clinic: Almost 1,500 new patients of lung cancer get treated here with 85% of cancers reported being NSCLC type. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center: Located in New York, this facility has specialized radiation oncologists, pathologists and surgeons. It has an Integrated Cancer Treatment Center which treats patients physically and emotionally. Parallel therapies like acupuncture, homeopathy, creative and touch therapy are offered. It also provides video-assisted surgery of thorax, radiation and chemotherapy.

Fox Chase: Based in Philadelphia, this facility handles complicated cases of lung cancer especially if the cancer is non-operable or recurring. The tumors are monitored closely to determine responses to chemotherapy treatments. Malignant lesions are closely monitored by the pathologists. This facility also offers clinical trial option to patients.

Depending on the stage and type of cancer, treatment required will vary. One may need specialists like oncologist who will arrange chemotherapy along with traditional treatment, radiation therapist who will arrange radiotherapy or thoracic surgeon for surgery. The best option would be to look for a facility with multi-disciplinary team who will co-ordinate the treatment. This will also increase the survival rate.

Treatment for lung cancer can go on for weeks or months. Hence, location of the facility close to one’s residence becomes important because the individual has to undergo an exhausting treatment. Closely located facility will reduce travel time and inconveniences.
If the best suited facility is far, one can opt for having a tie-up between the local oncology team and the team at the specialized facility which is far away. The recommended treatment from the high-ranked hospital can be executed by the team at the local facility and the follow-ups can be dealt with by the specialist located away.
