Lung cancer trial is basically a research work that is made on the lung cancer patients to determine and establish the various treatments to cure the disease and also to establish a strategy to detect the lung cancer at the earliest stage. These clinical research and trials are made across the globe to come up with the detection method and the therapeutics to cope up with the growing rates of lung cancer.
The research shows that smoking is dangerous to health and it is identified as the major risk factor for lung cancer and the death rate in lung cancer patients due to smoking is 87 percent. It is also focused to find the genes present that make people susceptible to cancer of the lungs.
It is suggested that consuming a diet with good volume of fruits and vegetables, regular health check ups like chest X-rays, and sputum examination could control and help diagnose lung cancer at the earlier stage respectively, but unfortunately even routine check ups fail to detect it at the earlier stages.
There was a lung cancer trial called the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST), which was established in a large set of lung cancer patients claim that the spiral CT scanning was very effective and lowered the mortality rate in lung cancer patients when compared to the diagnosis with that of chest X-rays.
Researchers are trying to find tests that are more sensitive in detecting presence of cancer-causing cells in the sputum of the patients and also in detecting small changes at the DNA level. This will allow oncologists to detect cancer of the lung in the initial stages itself. Some of the techniques stood the clinical trial and are used extensively in detection of lung cancer include fluorescence bronchoscopy, virtal bronchoscopy, and standard bronchoscopy.
The therapeutics are also subjected to clinical trials before they are employed in patients. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is used in the treatment of small cell lung cancer where the patients cannot be operated. The combination of the chemotherapy drugs are tested for their efficacy against cancer of the lungs.
Targeted therapies that are employed in the treatment of non small cell lung cancer include bevacizumab, erlotinib, crizotinib, vadimezan, afatinib, motesanib, sorafenib (Nexavar) and sunitinib (Sutent). The vaccine like L-BLP25 helps prevent non small cell lung cancer is also under clinical trial.
These clinical trials are very much useful and would help patients with this type of cancer better chances of survival.
