Lung Cancer Symptoms

The stage of cancer at the time of detection will have slight variations in the symptoms indicated. The location of the tumor and the extent of spread of the cancer will present itself in different ways. Some of the symptoms demonstrated by such patients include:

No symptom: During a routine X-ray of the chest or a CT-scan, almost 25 percent of them get detected. The tumor is called ‘coin lesion’ since the three-dimensional mass when reported in a two-dimensional scale of X-ray or CT-scan will appear as a coin. These small masses often appearing singly will not cause any symptoms when they appear.

Symptoms: Once the tumor grows and invades the tissues in the lung, breathing may get affected. This in turn will cause symptoms like cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, pain in the chest, or throwing up blood with cough. In case the cancer has reached the nerves, symptoms like shoulder pain which travels right down the arm or vocal cord paralysis may appear. Spread of cancer to the esophagus can result in a problem when it comes to swallowing. If the airway is restricted to a large extent, a part of the lung may collapse. The area in the passage which is obstructed may also get infected with abscesses or pneumonia.

Symptoms of cancer that has spread: If cancer spreads to the bones, the individual will experience excruciating pain. If the spread is to the brain, numerous neurological symptoms may develop like headaches, blurring of vision, seizures and so on. Other symptoms of a stroke like weakness or loss of any sensation in a particular part of the body will be experienced.

Paraneoplastic symptoms: Certain symptoms get induced by the production of substances from the cancer cells which resemble hormones. These symptoms occur more with SCLC and few other tumors. The most common one is the secretion of cortisol hormone by the adrenal gland in response to the production of adrenocorticotrophic hormone by the cancerous cells. This condition is termed as ‘Cushing’s syndrome’. In the category of NSCLC, calcium level in the blood increases due to the secretion of a substance that is quite similar to hormone secreted by the parathyroid gland.

Non-specific symptoms: Some other symptoms are loss of weight, fatigue, mood swings, depression and weakness.

A person should consult the doctor immediately on the occurrence chronic cough or worsening of persistent cough, chest pain, blood in sputum, persistent respiratory infections, bronchitis, unexplainable weight loss, fatigue, wheezing orshortness of breath.
