Current Research For Lung Cancer

Today, research for lung cancer has become quite popular, as this form of cancer is responsible for causing maximum cancer-related deaths. Different researches are not only trying to find out how to prevent cancer, they are also trying to find how to treat the cancer more effectively and how to ensure that the patient gets the best care after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Some of the current researches for lung cancer are discussed below.

One of the lung cancer researches is studying the characteristics of not only the patients, but also the malignancies the patients have. This will help doctors to identify which cancer therapy would be most effective in treating a particular patient. Basically, if this research finds the answers it is looking for, lung cancer patients will be able to personalize their therapies. As a result the therapy will look for the best way to treat the malignancy in the lung.

Today, two common methods to treat lung cancer are surgery to remove the tumor and radiation therapy. However, now researchers are looking for ways to boost the efficacy of the surgery as well as radiation therapy. In addition, they are also looking for ways to reduce the side effects associated with these treatment protocols.

Research is also looking for ways to find lung cancer early. If patients are screened early, it will help improve their chances of survival. Also, an early diagnosis means that the cancer can be treated more effectively. Hence, researchers are trying to find better screen methods, such helical CT scanning and other imaging techniques. At the moment there is no effective lung cancer screening method.

At the moment clinical trials are being conducted to find out how to reduce the side effects that patients experience due to the different treatments. If researchers can find a way to ease the side effects of treatments, not only will the patients feel more comfortable and at ease, they will also have a better quality of life during the treatment phase.

We know that smoking is one of the main causes for lung cancer. However, researchers are still trying to figure out why some smokers get lung cancer and others do not. They are trying to understand whether smoking is genetic and that is the reason why some smokers find is so hard to give up smoking. They are even testing cigarettes to find out whether there are some chemical in different types of cigarettes that make people more susceptible to lung cancer.

In addition, researchers are also trying to figure out how exercise, diet, medications and nutritional supplement affect people and how they can prevent a person from getting lung cancer. Researchers have found that exercise can not only prevent development of lung cancer, it can also improve patients’ survivability. Also, it has been found that consuming food that is rich in beta carotene and Vitamin E reduces the chances of getting lung cancer.

Some of the current researches for lung cancer also include preventing development of the malignancy through nutrition, chemoprevention and certain medications. At the moment, researchers are checking how effective green tea can be in preventing cancer of the lungs. They are also checking a compound called inositol that is present in beans, grains and nuts, and certain medications, such as those used to treat diabetes and some types of painkillers. There is also a lot of interest in cruciferous vegetables, as they contain a compound called phenethyl isothiocyanate. They think that this compound can prevent development of lung cancer.

Hence, in the future, it is quite possible that through these lung cancer researches, doctors may be able to prevent development of the malignancy altogether.

Lung Cancer Stages      Lung cancer in humans can be broadly classified as small cell lung cancer and non small cell lung cancer. The classification depends on the severity of the malignancy and will also help in determining the treatment, which the oncologist will recommend. This staging helps in identifying which treatment is most suited for killing the cancer and not the prognosis. More..
