Lung cancer is the deadliest type of cancer. At least that is what statistics reveals. The CDC states that lung cancer causes more deaths compared to deaths caused by breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer together. Under normal circumstances, when a person is diagnosed with lung cancer, the oncologist will opt for chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery or a combination of therapies to treat the patient. However, now more and more patients are looking for alternative treatments.
Hence, there is a spurt in alternative experimental lung cancer treatments. Many of these treatments are being tested in laboratories and through clinical trials to check their efficacy and effectiveness in destroying the cancer-causing cells. Some are more successful than others. The reason why alternative lung cancer treatments are more in demand is that the associated side effects are perceived to be less compared to convention therapies.
Some of the alternative experimental lung cancer treatments are discussed below:
Ellagic acid is being touted as a potential treatment for lung cancer and other forms of cancer. The acid is plant-based and is naturally found in fruits such as cranberries, raspberries and strawberries. It is also found in pecan nuts, pomegranates and walnuts. The efficacy of ellagic acid was tested in lab setting on animals and it was found that the acid has the ability to reduce the growth of malignant tumors.
Acupuncture has been practiced in several Asian countries for centuries. It is claimed by inserting acupuncture needles in specific points in the body, negative energies are released and the person feels better. Also, some acupuncturists claim that it can help heal chronic and serious diseases, such as lung cancer. However, the famed Mayo Clinic states that there is no evidence that acupuncture can cure a person from lung cancer or any other cancer. However, there is evidence to show that acupuncture can alleviate the symptoms of the treatment. Usually, when a person is being treated for lung cancer or any other type of cancer using conventional therapies, the person will suffer from dryness of the mouth, nausea and vomiting. These symptoms can be alleviated with the help of acupuncture, according to several studies.
Another alternative experimental lung cancer treatment is using sodium bicarbonate. As per Dr Tullio Simoncini, an oncologist from Italy, by giving a cancer patient sodium bicarbonate either orally or intravenously, it can help to kill the cancer-causing cells. The doctor believes that cancer is a type of fungus that can be killed using baking soda or sodium bicarbonate. He also claims that if the cancer has not spread, the person can administer the treatment himself/herself. The doctor claims that he has successfully treated cancer of the lungs using a 5 percent sodium bicarbonate solution. However, this claim needs to be scientifically proven, and that is why it is still listed as alternative experimental lung cancer treatment.
