What Is The Survival Rate Of Colon Cancer ?

Survival rate refers to the possibility of survival of cancer patients for a specific time period.

However, the rate cannot exactly predict the state of the patient. Only a broad idea is delivered. This idea is based on the state of other patients affected by the same disease. This works as a guide for the patient and his or her family members that if the proper treatment is provided, what are the chances of the patient overcoming the disease or living a pain-free life for a particular period of time.

The survival rate depends upon the complexity of the stage of the cancer. Colon cancer affects the digestive system, including the colon, appendix and rectum. It is also termed as colorectal cancer or large bowel cancer

When the cancer is diagnosed in the early stages, it can be treated very easily. The survival rate for five years is more than 95 percent. From last 20 years, the survival rate of colon cancer is continuously increasing. This has been possible due to the advancements in medical technology.

As the stage increases, the possibility of survival decreases. According to the National Cancer Institute, the survival rates are 93 percent, 85 percent, 72 percent, 83 percent, 64 percent, 44 percent and 8 percent for stages 1, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 3C and 4 respectively.

The complexity and thus, the survival rate also depend upon the location of the tumor. Location in the ascending, transverse and descending colon has the survival rate of 63 percent, 59 percent and 66 percent respectively.

The treatment includes surgery as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This helps in increasing the survival rate by 5 percent to 6 percent.
