When Are You Considered A Cancer Survivor ?

If a person has cancer and has been treated for the same as a result of which the body does not have any malignant cells for a duration of one year, the person is considered to be a cancer survivor.

However, as medical science has advanced, it has managed to change the concept and understanding of who a cancer survivor is.Today, anyone who has cancer or even had cancer in the past, but is still alive in spite of the disease is considered to be a cancer survivor. Basically this concept takes into consideration the struggle the patient had to undergo to every single day in order to live, and the problems he or she had to face to cope with the disease on a daily basis.

The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorships also considers family and friends of the cancer patient who were affected by the disease as part of cancer survival. These include the care givers, children, friends, spouse and/or parents who went through the stress of seeing their loved one being diagnosed with the disease and then supporting the patient to fight and live. Therefore, in the broad sense, even if a patient loses his life to the disease, the close friends and families are also considered as cancer survivors as these people also had to make changes in their lives when the patient was diagnosed with cancer and be there for the patient right through his or her treatment.

Under this broad definition of cancer, a patient who survives for a year without the malignancy is known as a cancer survivor, and also the close family and friends who have suffered along with him or her.
