What Is The Definition Of Cancer ?

A simple definition of cancer would be a disease where cells of the body undergo uncontrolled division thereby affecting the normal division and growth.

Usually these cells tend to invade the surrounding healthy tissue, and sometimes, they can travel to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph and thus, affecting those parts of the body.In a body that is normal, the cells divide, grow and then die. As the cells die, new cells take over their place. However, when cells turn cancerous, the replacement of cells occurs even when not required, and the cells tend to have longer life than the normal cells. That is why it is important to detect cancer in the early stages where the growth of the cells that have turned cancerous can be stopped. This, in turn, gives the person a better chance of surviving the disease.

When the cancerous cells spread to other parts of the body through blood or lymph, the process is known as metastasis. These cancerous cells tend to affect healthy tissues to form mass of cells that grow uncontrollably. This mass is known as tumor. However, not all cancers form tumors. For example, leukemia is a type of cancer where no tumor is formed. Instead the cancerous cells circulate in the blood and bone marrow.

It is important to note that not all tumors formed in the body are cancerous. There are some tumors that are known as benign tumors or non-cancerous tumors. These tumors are not fatal and do not spread in the body.

Some of the different types of cancer are leukemia, sarcoma, carcinoma, lymphoma and myeloma.
