Cancer treatment cost is quite high, and can run into hundreds and thousands of dollars per patient each year.
This simple fact affects the treatment measures. Due to high cancer treatment costs, many patients try to avoid certain medical procedures and medications, which otherwise would help to treat the disease and make their life easier. In the US, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, also referred to as ASCO, is working with cancer specialists to ensure that there is enough communication between the doctor and patient about the cost factor. For many cancer patients, at the time of diagnosis, they are ill-equipped to handle the additional onus of treating cancer. They do not have the money or financial resources to ensure that they receive the appropriate treatment as many cancer drugs are quite expensive, and so also the surgery.
However, ASCO has prepared a guide that can help cancer patients to manage their financial when they are undergoing treatment for the disease. The guide advises that patients should speak to their doctors to see whether they can get assistance with the cost of the treatment from other sources. Many times this is possible, and if patients do not speak openly to their doctors, they may miss out on this much needed financial help.
Cancer patients, who have health insurance, do get some form of financial support, but not all costs of the treatment are covered by the insurance. Therefore, they are bound to have out of pocket expenses, which at times can be high. By speaking to doctors, immaterial whether a patient has health insurance or not, doctors can suggest effective measures to reduce the cancer treatment cost and also referring patients to support organizations that help cancer patients who are facing problems in footing the bill.
