How Does Cancer Occur ?

Today, cancer is considered to be the third main cause of deaths around the world.

According to estimates, more than 12 million cases of cancer are diagnosed each year around the world, and over 7.6 million people die each year due to cancer. Some experts believe that by 2030, cancer-related deaths will increase to a whopping 11.5 million each year.Taking this information into consideration, it is important to know how cancer occurs so that we can take preventive measures to reduce the risk of developing the disease.

Our body is composed of many different types of cells. Under normal conditions, these cells divide and multiply in a controlled manner. This is a normal process and helps to keep the body healthy. In this case, whenever cells get damaged or old, through division and multiplication, new cells replace these damaged and old cells.

However, sometimes, there is a problem in the way the cells divide. The DNA within the cells undergoes mutations or gets damaged, and as a result the normal process of division and growth of cells is affected. Under these circumstances, the cells do not die. Instead, the cells start producing new cells even when there is no need of these cells. As a result, the additional cells that are added end up forming a mass of tissue known as tumors.

These tumors can be non cancerous or benign, or they can be malignant or cancerous. When the cells are cancerous, they tend to attack and invade even the healthy cells that are present next to them. As a result the cancer spreads. Also, sometimes, the cancerous cells travel from the affected part to other parts of the body through lymph and/or blood, and as a result the cancer tends to develop in other parts of the body.
