According to some experts, alcoholism can be caused if a disease is present in the brain that changes the structure and function of the brain.

However, not everyone in the medical fraternity accept that alcoholism is a disease. Nonetheless, researchers are conducting studies and research on brain diseases caused due to alcoholism.A recent study has revealed that drinking excessive alcohol can permanently damage the brain. According to the study, if a person consumes a lot of alcohol, it can injure the brain and also cause brain degeneration as the insulin and insulin-like growth factor production is inhibited.

The researchers claim that if a person suffers from chronic alcoholism, then he will have less genes required for the brain to react to insulin and insulin-like growth factor. This, in turn, will lead to neuro-degeneration, a problem that is similar to the degeneration that a person with Type 2 diabetes suffers from.

The research was conducted by the Rhode Island Hospital and Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University. The researchers say that insulin is one of the hormones that is most important in the body. It helps to regulate metabolism, and practically all cells in the body require insulin to survive and carry out the day-to-day functions.

Therefore, this can lead us to assume that the toxic effects of alcohol can cause brain diseases. In fact, the toxicity of alcohol is so high that it has the ability to damage and kill the cells in the brain. However, as alcohol is broken down by the intestines and liver, the amount that reaches the brain is low. Nonetheless, chronic alcoholism can lead to brain diseases.
