Obesity is quite commonly observed among people in the modern times. There are several factors that are leading to this condition, lifestyle being one of the most common out of all. Asthma, on the other hand, is also one of the most commonly developed diseases these days.
But, very few people might be aware of the fact that obesity can largely affect asthma. Though there are no such sure shot statistics available, several studies are found claiming that around seventy-five percent of the asthma emergency cases include obese patients.
Obesity is known to affect the lung and the airways structure. The obese people are also likely to have increased amount of mass of the chest wall and abdomen. All these factors result in narrowed airways. The other thing that has come up as a result of various researches is that obese people have much greater breathing rates but the tidal volumes are significantly lesser to other people which weaken the bronchodilatory outcome of the tidal pull.
Children who suffer from obesity as well as asthma at the same time are more likely to have poorly developed lungs resulting in reduced functions that must be carried out by this body organ. Obesity in children may result in persistence of asthma for a very long time. Researchers are trying their best to find out the actual cause of the relationship between obesity. Thus, one of the best preventive measures towards reducing the asthmatic attacks would be to control the body weight to safe figures.
