HIV is the short form of Human immunodeficiency Virus. It is a type of virus that affects humans and causes diseases like AIDS. It is a killer virus. Howsoever it is important to know that everyone who gets infected with the virus is not going to get AIDS. There are multiple reasons for which a person infected with this virus gets AIDS. In many cases it was found that the virus attacked people with low immunity levels.
This virus was first found in Africa in the 1940s. A similar virus known as the SIV was found in monkeys and I caused AIDS in them. The DNA and genetic character of both HIV and the SIV were extremely similar. However the SIV had no impact on human beings and did not harm them.
AIDS is a disease caused by the HIV virus. It stands for Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. It is the disease of the immune system. When a person gets AIDS, their immune system is weakened gradually. They become so weak that they keep falling sick frequently. Even simple cuts and burns do no heal, and also the person cannot expect to live very long. Once a person has been diagnosed with AIDS they may not live beyond three years. AIDS is mainly spread through sexual contact. It does not spread by just psychical contact or even holding an infected person. However, if some instruments used by infected people are used on a normal person, the virus can be transmitted if it comes in contact with the blood. AIDS can also be caused due to blood transfusion when the blood of an infected person is given to a normal person.
