The cause of AIDS is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus that renders the immune system of the human body totally incapacitated to ward off or fight any form of infections. Once the virus infests the body, it slowly degrades the immune system of the body by destroying the T cells. While a healthy person shows a value of about more than 1000 T cells, in an HIV positive individual the number slowly declines to about 800 within a few months. When this figure touches 200 and less, the disease is termed as AIDS.
Unfortunately in the initial stages of the infection, the disease may not give off any warning signs at all. This may be the situation for many years to come, despite the virus continuously breaking down the body immunity.
However, there are a few evident warning signs of HIV infection that surface within the first month of infection itself. If one is vigilant enough to identify the same without confusing them to be associated with common flu, then the disease may be caught early. These warning signs of HIV include fever, joint pain, rash and swollen lymph nodes. As the infection progresses, the symptoms may manifest in the form of fever, night sweats, tiredness, weight loss, coughing, diarrhea and thrush that is an infection affecting the gullet, vagina, rectum and skin. However, the most authentic way of identifying the disease is a medical test.
When the immunity deteriorates to a significant level of less than 200 T cells, the disease is officially designated as AIDS. The warning signs of this condition can be observed in the form of some severe infections and cancers. Kaposi's sarcoma is one of them, which is diagnosed specifically in victims of AIDS. It commences by affecting the legs or mouth in the form of purplish red skin sores and finally spreads to the lymph nodes. Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer of the digestive tract, brain, spinal cord, bone marrow, liver or lungs is also a sign of the fatal disease. Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia affects the lungs and causes fever, breathing problems and fatigue. Other symptoms of AIDS include Cytomegalovirus, Toxoplasmosis, Mycobacterium Avium Complex and Tuberculosis.
