Usually, when a person suffers from food poisoning, he or she will get many symptoms. The severity of the symptoms will vary from person to person, depending on how bad the poisoning is. However, generally, the person will experience cramps in the stomach, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
According to the CDC, there are over 250 different types of food poisoning, and majority of them are caused due to consumption of foods that are contaminated with certain kinds of bacteria, parasites, viruses and toxins that the pathogens produce. The most common pathogens that cause food poisoning include E. coli, listeria and salmonella.
Usually, when a person gets food poisoning, the last thing he or she will think about is eating or drinking. However, eating and drinking will ensure that the body stays hydrated and also the body has adequate strength to recover from the illness.
A person will start experiencing the symptoms based on the kind of pathogen he or she has consumed, and this will also determine how long the symptoms continue. Usually, the symptoms tend to come on a few hours after eating the contaminated food, and they can last anywhere from 1 day to 10 days. As the symptoms of food poisoning begin to subside, the person will be in a better frame of mind to eat. However, the kind of things he or she consumes should be easy on the digestive system and prevent the symptoms from returning.
Usually, when a person suffers from food poisoning, it is important that the body is kept well hydrated. Most people have terrible bouts of diarrhea and this can cause the body to get dehydrated. Hence, whether a person is vomiting or having diarrhea, it is necessary to give the body steady supply of fluids to prevent dehydration. Fluids like milk, caffeinated beverages, tea, coffee and alcohol should be completely avoided. Instead the person should be given water, broths and ginger ale. The person can also be given non-caffeinated sports drinks to replenish the lost electrolytes. It is best to sip anything that you are drinking slowly. To ease dryness of the mouth and lips or nausea, the person can suck ice chips.
It is recommended that the person not eat solids until the diarrhea has disappeared. Also, the person should not get back to solid foods immediately. Instead, he or she should try to first eat bland foods such as dry toast, white rice, crackers, bananas and applesauce. The person should make an effort to eat right through the day to help the body recover from the illness.
