Colonoscopy is the surgery of the colon. For this surgery to be possible, the bowel should be prepared.
It is a complicated procedure, and it may start well in advance, maybe three to four days before the surgery. The medical practitioner gives the advice depending on the patient’s physical health condition. The procedure involves inserting a tube through the anus to view the insides of the colon. If there are any polyps present, the procedure helps to identify them. Also, through this procedure, conditions like colon cancer can be identified in the early stages. However, a colonoscopy is used to determine several other conditions. It is used to determine the reason for constant abdominal pain, bowel problems, weight loss and also bleeding from the rectum. In order to be ready for the procedure, the patient is put on a restrictive diet.
On the day of the actual surgery, the bowels are maintained absolutely empty. So, the preparation for this starts well in advance. You have to discontinue iron supplements if any, and also eliminate fibrous foods from the diet. Any ingredients like chicken, white fish, boiled and steamed vegetables, eggs, cheese, potatoes, and white bread should be avoided. Also, just 2 days before the surgery, patients should avoid taking any kinds of solids. This also includes nuts, fruit, rice and red meat. What you can have is a light breakfast, tea and coffee, strained fruit juices, apple juice, and some energy drinks like Gatorade. On the day of colonoscopy, you will only be allowed to have clear fluids.
