Disadvantages of Stem Cell Research

             Stem cell research is the talk of the town. It is certainly one of the most hotly debated topics in the past few years. Although the applications for stem cell technology are tremendous, they raise many ethical dilemmas and problems for the scientific community. The following are some of the disadvantages of stem cell research.

• Stem cell research may involve the destruction of laboratory-fertilized human egg which is also known as “blastocysts”.  This is unacceptable and immoral to some people who believe that life begins at conception
• The technology is still very new. It is very much in its infancy state. We still don’t know its long term effects.
• Recent studies show that the coronary arteries of heart disease patients may become narrower from stem cell treatment.
• There is a possibility that patient’s body may reject embryonic stem cells, because of tissue incompatibility.
• Contrary to the popularly belief, stem cell treatment may not be the cure for all diseases.
• The technology is still very new. Believe it or not, it is also very expensive. The benefits from stem cell technology and research may be only accessible to the rich and the upper class of the population.
