Natural Remedy For Mosquito Repellant

Mosquitoes have complex methods of detecting hosts. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, while some of them seek hosts during the day. Mosquitoes are attracted by certain items or situations. One can avoid being bitten, by making sure not to attract mosquitoes, using attractants to lure them elsewhere, use a repellent, etc.

Items that attract mosquitoes are dark clothing, carbon dioxide, lactic acid, floral or fruity fragrances, skin temperatures and moisture.

There are a number of natural products that can be used as mosquito repellants. Such products are citronella oil, lemon eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil, castor oil, rosemary oil, lemongrass oil, cedar oil, peppermint oil, clove oil, geranium oil and oils from verbena, pennyroyal, lavender, pine, cajuput, basil, thyme, allspice, soybean and garlic.

Different strains of mosquitoes are repelled by different chemicals. Hence, a certain amount of experimentation may be required to find what works best. These repellents can either be used singly, if suitable effective, or as a mix. Also, the efficacy of natural repellants is not as long as their chemical counterparts, so they might have to be used more frequently.

Activities and items that lower the effectiveness of these repellants are the use of sunscreens, dilution from rain, perspiration and swimming, absorption into the skin or evaporation of the oil from wind or high temperatures.

Natural remedies do not automatically imply safety. Some people are sensitive to plant oils. Therefore, although natural repellants provide an alternative to synthetic chemicals, one should follow the user instruction when using these products.
