What Is A Doctor Of Natural Medicine ?

Naturopathy is an alternative medical system that focuses on natural remedies and the body’s vital ability to heal and maintain itself. The philosophy of naturopathy favors a holistic approach and minimal used of drugs. It comprises of different treatment disciplines with varying degrees of acceptance by the conventional medical community.

Diet and lifestyle recommendations are largely similar to that offered in conventional medicine, and acupuncture could reduce pain, but homeopathy is viewed with extreme skepticism. Natuorpathy originated during the Nature Cure Movement in Europe.

Naturopathy is practiced across the world. The level of medical education reaches the same level of training as an MD or DO. In the US and Canada, the designation of a Naturopathic Doctor may be awarded after completion of a four year program of study at a Naturopathic Medical school.

The methodologies used in naturopathy are acupuncture, applied kinesiology, botanical medicine, chelation therapy, colonic enemas, color therapy, cranial osteopathy, hair analysis, homeopathy, iridology, live blood analysis, nature cure, nutrition, ozone therapy, physical medicine, psychological counseling, public health and hygiene, reflexology and traditional Chinese medicine.

Naturopathic care is available from three broad categories -- practitioners with a four years degree, practitioners who are self taught and practitioners who operate under another professional license. A naturopathic doctor is a protected designation with some form of licensing and training requirements in at least 15 US states, the District of Columbia and 5 Canadian provinces. They must have passed board exams set by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners after completing academic and clinical training at a certified college.
