Occupational therapy embodies a purposeful and meaningful occupation to enable people who are challenged to share in everyday life. It is the promotion of health and well-being through significant occupation.
Therapists achieve their goal not merely by promoting the ability of the person to participate, but also by suitable endeavoring to alter the environment of the activity to better facilitate participation.
Occupational therapy is about appreciating how important an activity is to an individual. It is the ability to break down the activity into its social, physical and mental elements and adapting them, the person or the environment such that the person is able to participate in, or resume such activity. Occupational therapists analyze a challenged person’s limitations and then alter the circumstances of the activity in such a manner that they can then be performed to favorably impact the person’s well-being and health. Occupational therapy aids a challenged individual to live life to the fullest.
Occupational therapy, in fact, epitomizes the philosophy of holistic health. The activities addressed by an occupational therapist are those that are held in esteem by the individual and his culture. Such occupational areas revolve around the essential activities of daily life like grooming, eating and dressing and other activities associated with normal living such as work, health, play, leisure activities and social interaction.
It is the function of the therapist to make a complete evaluation of the person as a whole towards a total assessment of motivational, intellectual, social and process skills. Only with the knowledge of such an assessment will a therapist be in a position to devise suitable therapy towards bettering the individual’s quality of life.
