Holistic medicine is a scheme of health care which promotes a cooperative connection among all those concerned, towards optimal achievement of the mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of health.

 A person’s limited health care FSA funds are available only for certain expenses.  These do not generally cover holistic health care. They are generally restricted to dental care, including orthodontic; vision care, including eyeglasses and contact lenses; and preventive care including vaccines and diagnostic tests. Over-the-counter and prescription items are also reimbursable but restricted to items associated with vision, dental and preventive care only.

However, after health plan’s deductibles are met, reimbursement is available for all health care expenses that qualify under FSA. In fact, once the deductibles are met, the plan works similar to that of a standard health care FSA. Post-deductible reimbursements in such a situation are not restricted to dental, preventive and vision care exclusively.

Subject to the employer's Summary Plan Description, health care expenses are reimbursable from your health care FSA for an alternative medicine provider. However, this must be recommended by a health care professional. The heading for reimbursement includes holistic and homeopathic procedures and treatment. Evidence of medical necessity is required and the expense is categorized on a qualified, limited-purpose basis.
